Cecilia Österholm Corbascio, Ph.D.

Dr. Cecilia Österholm Corbascio joined NSU MD in 2017 and serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the NSU Cell Therapy Institute. She also is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Karolinska Institutet (KI) in Stockholm, Sweden.

Dr. Österholm's research focus is cardiovascular disease with emphasis on heart valve conditions. Together with collaborators at NSU, she investigates the possibilities to improve the long-term performance of biological heart valve scaffolds using a regenerative approach. The project is a joint venture between NSU and KI.

Dr. Österholm was born in Sweden and received her Ph.D. in Surgical Sciences in 2005 from Lund University. Her interest in cardiovascular disease started during her graduate studies in transplantation and she continued with postdoctoral studies of the cardiovascular extracellular matrix at The University of Bergen, Norway. After a second postdoctoral period at KI, where she focused on atherosclerosis research, she was invited to join the faculty of the university.

Dr. Österholm supervises a number of graduate and also undergraduate students and teaches translational medicine at the Master Program in Biomedicine at KI. She also serves as a part-time faculty member at the study-abroad institute DIS in Stockholm, where she organizes and teaches courses in translational medicine.
