H. Thomas Temple, M.D.

Dr. H. Thomas Temple joined NSU in 2015 as senior vice president of NSU Division of Research and Economic Development (DoR). He also serves as Professor, Orthopaedics for NSU MD.

Dr. Temple is responsible for lending support to faculty in the development of ideas, discoveries, and technologies, and building connections and resources for the commercialization of research activities. He establishes partnerships with companies, investors, and entrepreneurs interested in utilizing NSU’s Center for Collaborative Research (CCR) to conduct research and develop technologies. He also bridges research efforts between those conducted at the CCR and at the NSU Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography at the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Center.

An orthopedic surgeon who specializes in musculoskeletal oncology, Dr. Temple has a clinical interest in regenerative medicine. He holds privileges at HCA East Florida hospitals and maintains a surgical practice that complements his role at NSU.

Prior to joining NSU, Dr. Temple served as chief of the Orthopedic Oncology Division at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he was a professor of orthopedics and pathology, director of the university’s Tissue Bank, and vice-chairman of the Department of Orthopedics.

Dr. Temple’s clinical interests include the novel treatment of benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors in children and adults, tissue transplantation, and complex limb reconstruction. His research interests are stem cell applications in bone and cartilage regeneration, tissue banking, and developing targeted therapies for sarcomas.

Dr. Temple earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a Doctor of Medicine from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and his musculoskeletal oncology fellowship at Harvard University– Massachusetts General Hospital–Boston Children’s Hospital. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Dr. Temple has authored more than 200 scientific articles and book chapters. He is assistant editor for Foot and Ankle International and a reviewer for Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He is also a board examiner for the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Dr. Temple is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Orthopedic Association, the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, the International Skeletal Society, the American Association of Tissue Banks, the Girdlestone Society, and the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society.
