Dr. Dawn Owens is a newly recruited faculty member of the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor. Before this position, she was a postdoctoral scholar and T-32 grant recipient for Drs. J. William Harbour and Daniel Pelaez ocular oncology and research laboratories at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine that is affiliated with the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and McKnight Vision Research Center. Her postdoctoral research centered around the study of uveal melanoma and drug discovery techniques for this disease.

In 2010, Dr. Dawn Owens earned her B.S. in Biology from the university of Florida Gulf Coast University. By 2017, she continued her education at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine to earn her Ph. D. in Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology where her graduate work focused on the identification of transcripts within the oocyte that are required for normal germ cell formation.

Outside of research, Dr. Owens has focused on the development of her skills in the field of Medical Education. Her experience and teaching interests include cell biology, cancer biology, embryology, cell physiology, anatomy, physiology, histology.
