Dr. Stephen Ely joined the faculty of the College of Allopathic Medicine in October of 2017 as an Associate Professor of Medical Education and the Co-Course Director of the Cardiac, Pulmonary and Renal systems course.

He has a broad background in research, teaching, and clinical practice.

Dr. Ely, a Michigan native, graduated with a B.S., majoring in English from Western Michigan University, an M.S and Ph.D. in Physiology from Michigan State University, and an M.D. from the University of Virginia, where he also completed residencies in General Surgery and Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.

He is Board Certified in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and has more than 20 years of clinical experience focusing on coronary bypass surgery, valve surgery, aortic surgery, and the surgical management of advanced heart failure including artificial heart technology.

Dr. Ely's research interests have focused on the role of adenosine in the metabolic control of the coronary circulation and protection of the heart during cardiac surgery. He holds multiple patents in the clinical use of adenosine.
