Dr. R. Daniel Bonfil is a recognized expert in Cancer Biology, with a research career dedicated to unraveling the mechanisms driving cancer invasion, metastasis, and angiogenesis.
He joined Nova Southeastern University in 2017, where he serves as Professor of Pathology and Medical Education at the College of Allopathic Medicine and teaches across multiple health professions programs. From 2017 to 2022, he was Chair of the Division of Pathology.
Dr. Bonfil earned his Licentiate (equivalent to combined B.Sc. and M.Sc. in the United States) and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and completed post-doctoral training at the Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, PA. Before moving to the United States, he was a Tenured Research Investigator at CONICET (National Council for Scientific and Technological Research), directing research groups at the National Academy of Medicine and later at the Center for Pharmacological Studies (CEFYBO) in Buenos Aires. He also served nearly a decade as Scientific Director of FUNDIC (Cancer Research Foundation, Buenos Aires), leading initiatives in cancer research, education, and community outreach.
In 2002, Dr. Bonfil joined Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSU-SOM; Detroit, MI) as Associate Professor in Urology and Pathology, with a secondary appointment in Oncology at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. During his 15-years at WSU-SOM, his research - funded by the NIH and Department of Defense (DOD) - provided significant insights into the molecular and cellular mechanisms driving bone metastasis, a major complication of metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer and breast cancer.
Dr. Bonfil's service includes acting as a scientific reviewer for multiple DOD Study Sections on cancer and contributing as an editorial board member and reviewer for numerous medical and health sciences. His contributions include nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and over 90 abstracts at national and international meetings. His current research interest is mainly focused on liquid biopsies in cancer.
